What is Embryo Donation?
Embryo donation, also known as embryo adoption, is a method of assisted reproductive technology used in couples where both the man and woman experience infertility issues. In embryo donation, eggs and sperm obtained from donors are fertilized in the laboratory and then transferred to the uterus of the intended mother on the appropriate day.

Embryo donation can be performed in couples where eggs and sperm cannot be obtained in any way, in couples who have a genetic disease and have no chance of having a healthy child in any way (even with genetic analysis), in couples who have repeatedly tried but failed to develop quality embryos and have no chance of pregnancy, and in couples who have undergone repeated unsuccessful IVF attempts. Embryo donation can be applied in these cases.

It is of great importance to evaluate the general health status and gynecological condition of the recipient couple, especially the prospective mother, before embryo donation. Blood tests and hormone levels are assessed, and if necessary, a medicated uterine film (Hysterosalpingography-HSG) can be performed.
To prepare the uterus of the prospective mother for embryo transfer, if she is menstruating, treatment with uterine development-thickening medication or patches begins on the 2nd or 3rd day of her menstrual cycle, or if she is not menstruating, on a specific day determined according to the treatment program. This treatment continues for approximately 2 weeks.
At the end of the two weeks, the patient’s uterus is evaluated through ultrasound. After determining the suitable medications and timing for the transfer, the transfer day is scheduled. On the transfer day, the fertilized embryo is placed into the uterus of the prospective mother in a laboratory environment.
The Embryo Donation Treatment Process at British Cyprus IVF
Patients who apply to our hospital for embryo donation can carry out their treatment remotely in their own country according to our instructions. They only need to come to Cyprus for one day for the transfer procedure.
Before starting the treatment, you can have a free preliminary consultation with our doctor over the phone to receive information about the treatment process. During this consultation, you will be provided with detailed information about the necessary tests and examinations. If you wish, you can also come to Cyprus for a one-day visit for the preliminary consultation. Patients who will start the treatment in their own country need to undergo a gynecological examination and send all the tests and examinations they have done to our hospital.
After the tests and examinations are evaluated by our doctors, a personalized treatment program is planned for you.
Once all the tests and examinations for the treatment are completed, if you are menstruating, medication treatment for uterine preparation starts on the 2nd or 3rd day of your menstrual cycle. If you are in the menopausal period, you can start your treatment at any time. Egg and sperm donors are selected according to the recipient’s preferences (blood type, physical characteristics, ethnic origin, and the pictures they have provided to us), and the treatment is planned accordingly.
For the embryo transfer, you can plan a one-day trip. The embryos created with eggs and sperm selected according to the couple’s physical characteristics are monitored until the 5th day and then transferred to the prospective mother’s uterus on the 5th day. The remaining embryos can be stored upon the patient’s request.
The embryos created in embryo donation are used exclusively for that patient and are not used for any other patient due to sibling relationship.
On the day of the transfer procedure, your appointment will be scheduled at our hospital. There is no need for anesthesia for the transfer. After the transfer, you will be provided with detailed instructions regarding the medications you need to use. You can learn the result by taking a pregnancy (BHCG) test 10-12 days after the transfer.
How Do We Select the Donors for
Embryo Donation?
How Do We Select the Donors for
Embryo Donation?
The most important stage of donation treatments is the selection of suitable donors. When selecting our donors, we follow the principle of choosing the healthiest donors, not only based on egg quantity and quality. The donor selection process at our hospital is carried out in accordance with the guidelines published by the internationally respected reproductive medicine associations ESHRE and ASRM.
We are the only hospital in Cyprus that conducts detailed screening tests for genetic carrier status of diseases such as karyotype, cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, SMA, DMD, Fragile X, and more for all egg donors.
Another feature that sets us apart is the diversity of our donor pool. Being the first and most well-equipped IVF hospital in Cyprus, with 27 years of experience, we have the strongest donor pool in terms of diversity and numbers, allowing you to choose the physical and psychological characteristics, educational level, ethnic background, and other traits according to your preferences. We monitor the egg performance of our donors using specialized software.
All of our sperm donors are sourced from international quality-certified sperm banks operating abroad.
As the oldest and largest hospital with a donor pool in Cyprus, we are selective in determining our donors. Our donors undergo a rigorous screening process, not only based on their medical characteristics but also their socio-cultural attributes, professions, appearances, and even their personal lives, within strict guidelines.
