What is IVF Treatment?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a treatment method that enables couples experiencing infertility to have a baby using medical advancements and expertise.
Firstly, the female partner undergoes medication to stimulate the growth of her eggs. Then, the eggs are fertilized with sperm from the male partner in a laboratory setting, resulting in the formation of embryos. At the appropriate time, the embryos are transferred to the uterus of the female partner. In summary, this is how we can briefly describe the process of IVF, answering the question “What is IVF?”
What Causes Infertility?
The factors causing infertility vary between women and men. We can list the common reasons in women and men as follows:
Factors Causing Infertility in Women:
Ovarian Issues: Dysfunctions of the ovaries in women, such as diminished ovarian reserve or early menopause, can negatively affect fertility.
Tubal Blockage: Blockage of the fallopian tubes can prevent the egg from meeting the sperm and may result in infertility.
Endometriosis: Endometriosis is the spreading of tissues outside the uterus. This condition can have a negative impact on fertility.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Polycystic ovary syndrome can disrupt or prevent ovulation due to hormonal imbalances in the ovaries.
Factors Causing Infertility in Men:
Decreased Sperm Count: Decreased sperm count is the most common factor causing infertility in men.
Reduced Sperm Motility: Reduced sperm motility can make it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.
Testicular Damage or Infection: Damage or infection in the testicles can affect sperm production.
Hormonal Imbalances: Hormonal imbalances can reduce sperm production by affecting testosterone levels.
Other Factors Causing Infertility:
Age: Women’s age can negatively affect fertility. Especially after the age of 35, fertility rates decrease.
Smoking, Alcohol, and Drug Use: Smoking, alcohol, and drug use can have negative effects on fertility in both women and men.
Stress: Stress can cause hormonal imbalances and negatively impact fertility.
Excessive Weight or Underweight: Excessive weight or being underweight can lead to hormonal imbalances and negatively affect fertility.
Who Is In Vitro Fertilization Applied?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is performed for couples diagnosed with infertility who are unable to conceive naturally. It is recommended for women under the age of 35 to seek IVF treatment if they have been engaging in unprotected and regular intercourse for 1 year without achieving pregnancy. For women over the age of 35, if they have been trying to conceive for 6 months without success, it is advised to consider IVF. For women over the age of 40, if they have been trying for 3 months without achieving pregnancy, it is recommended to consult with a gynecologist without delay.

Is It Possible to Increase the IVF Success Rate?
It is possible to increase the success of IVF treatment. Here, we will discuss some of the most common reasons for unsuccessful IVF treatment and the precautions that can be taken to improve treatment success.
Lifestyle Changes: Adopting a healthy lifestyle can enhance the success of IVF treatment. This includes quitting smoking, following a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, and limiting alcohol consumption.
Choosing the Right Clinic: Selecting the right IVF clinic is also crucial for treatment success. A clinic that has experts in the field, utilizes the latest technologies, possesses advanced laboratory facilities, and has an experienced team plays a significant role in increasing the chances of successful treatment.
Egg Quality: Egg quality is an important factor that affects the success of IVF treatment. Lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and hormonal medications can be used to improve egg quality.
Sperm Quality: Male sperm quality is also a factor that affects treatment success. Therefore, it is recommended for men to maintain a healthy lifestyle and consider specific dietary supplements.
Enhancing Techniques: Technological advancements in IVF treatment can have a positive impact on success rates. For example, the use of Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI) allows for magnification of sperm by 8,000 times to select the healthiest ones. This directly influences the chances of success. Our hospital utilizes various techniques to increase the chances of pregnancy. Contact us for detailed information.
How Does IVF Happen?
To briefly summarize the answer to the question “How is IVF done?”: The process starts with a doctor’s consultation. During this consultation, tests and evaluations are conducted for the prospective mother (hormone and thyroid tests, prolactin levels, ovarian capacity assessment through medications like FSH, estradiol, or AMH, as well as a medicated uterine film or HSG) and the man’s semen analysis (spermogram). The prospective mother undergoes a gynecological examination and a vaginal ultrasound to determine the treatment protocol and timing. The examination aims to identify any obstacles to starting the treatment and to detect any conditions requiring treatment.
Once the decision for treatment is made, hormone medications for egg development are initiated on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle. After approximately 12 days of hormone treatment, the developed follicles are collected, and fertilization is carried out in the laboratory using sperm obtained from the prospective father. Subsequently, a 4-5 day embryo monitoring period begins. The embryos with the highest chances of implantation are then transferred to the mother’s uterus.
