What is Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)?
PGT, or Preimplantation Genetic Testing, is a diagnostic method used in conjunction with the IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) process to determine genetic disorders, carrier status for certain genetic diseases, and the gender of embryos. It is a widely used and highly effective method worldwide, with a scientific success rate of approximately 99.9% for gender determination.
PGD, or Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, is a genetic analysis technology that can examine chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X, and Y (which are the sex chromosomes) in embryos. In the PGD procedure, a biopsy is performed on the embryo on the 3rd day, and the extracted cells are sent to the genetic laboratory for analysis. Based on the results, the transfer of the selected embryo deemed suitable for the patient can be performed on the 4th or 5th day. Since only a limited number of chromosomes are screened, PGD provides results in a shorter period and is more cost-effective.
What is NGS?
NGS, or Next Generation Sequencing, is a genetic diagnostic test that enables comprehensive chromosomal screening of embryos, examining all 23 pairs of chromosomes. It is a genetic analysis technology that allows us to perform a thorough examination of all chromosomes that make up the embryo. Additionally, it can detect the chromosomes responsible for determining the gender.
With NGS, embryos are rapidly and effectively screened, and genetic abnormalities at the chromosomal level are detected before pregnancy. The result of the test is typically available within 3-4 weeks. The embryo transfer can be planned in the next menstrual cycle based on the waiting period for the test results. This method is highly sought after by families seeking detailed genetic screening, given the advancements in technology today.
How is Gender Selection Made?
Gender selection, only possible by performing genetic diagnostic tests on embryos during the IVF treatment process. It is not possible to determine the gender in a naturally conceived pregnancy. The process of gender selection is essentially the same as the steps involved in IVF treatment. In addition to the steps of IVF, embryos are specifically examined through genetic screening to determine their gender.
After the egg retrieval process, a biopsy is performed on the fertilized embryos on the 3rd or 5th day. The embryos undergo specialized procedures in our laboratory and are genetically analyzed. Healthy embryos of the desired gender are selected. Typically, the selected embryos are transferred to the uterus of the intended mother on the 5th day. The transfer procedure is painless, and it only requires the intended mother to come to our hospital for the day. A pregnancy test is performed from blood samples 12 days after the transfer.
The PGD test can be performed on embryos through biopsy when there is a genetic risk as required by legal regulations.
