What Is Sperm Donation?
Sperm donation is an assisted reproductive technique used when there is no sperm production due to genetic conditions or acquired causes. In this treatment, sperm is obtained from licensed international sperm banks. At British Cyprus IVF Hospital, we collaborate exclusively with certified sperm banks abroad that meet the highest international quality standards.
Although sperm donation is primarily used by men with azoospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate), it is also a popular option for single women and lesbian couples wishing to start a family.
Who Can Benefit from Sperm Donation?
Sperm donation may be recommended for:
- Men with undescended testicles that were not surgically treated in time
- Patients who have lost sperm production due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- Men whose testicular function is damaged due to mumps or high fever
- Individuals without testicles due to trauma, surgery, or congenital absence
- Men with genetic conditions preventing sperm production
- Couples with repeated IVF failures due to poor sperm quality
- Couples at risk of transmitting genetic disorders from consanguineous marriages
Single women or same-sex female couples
Sperm Donation Treatment at British Cyprus IVF
Before starting sperm donation treatment at British Cyprus, patients receive a full overview of the required tests and evaluations. You may visit our clinic for a same-day consultation or begin the process remotely via phone or email.
Patients starting the process in their home country can complete gynecological exams and required blood tests locally and send the results to our medical team. Once reviewed by our doctors, a customized treatment plan will be prepared based on your unique needs and test results.
Whether undergoing the full treatment in Cyprus or starting it abroad, the protocol remains the same. If you choose remote preparation, only 6 days in Cyprus are required to complete the process.
How Does the Sperm Donation Process Work?
There are two main approaches to sperm donation: IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) or IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).
For IUI Treatment:
- The woman’s ovulation is tracked naturally or stimulated with mild medications.
- A trigger shot is administered at the right time.
- 34–36 hours later, the donor sperm is prepared and injected into the uterus using a catheter.
For IVF Treatment:
- Hormonal stimulation begins on Day 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle.
- After 10–12 days of stimulation, egg retrieval is scheduled.
- Eggs are collected under general anesthesia and fertilized with donor sperm chosen based on physical and blood type compatibility.
- The resulting embryos are monitored for 4–6 days.
- One or more embryos are then transferred into the uterus.
- A pregnancy test (beta hCG) is performed 10–12 days later.
How Long Do I Need to Stay in Cyprus for Sperm Donation?
For IVF, a one-week stay is typically sufficient—starting from egg retrieval and ending a day after embryo transfer. However, patients with tight schedules may attend only on the egg retrieval and embryo transfer days, if preparations are completed abroad.
Pregnancy After Sperm Donation: What to Expect
Women who conceive via sperm donation experience a normal pregnancy and childbirth process, just like any natural or assisted pregnancy. Many of our patients at British Cyprus IVF have successfully achieved healthy pregnancies through this method.
How Are Sperm Donors Selected?
At British Cyprus IVF Hospital, we only use certified sperm samples from internationally accredited banks (such as Cryos or European Sperm Bank). Our sperm donor selection is based on:
- Blood type and physical characteristics (height, weight, eye color, skin tone, facial features)
- Education level, personality traits, and psychological evaluation
- Full genetic screening for diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis, Thalassemia, and Karyotype abnormalities
- Comprehensive infectious disease testing, including HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, CMV, and Chlamydia
All donor information, including genetic and serological test results, is provided with official certification.
If you prefer, you can select a donor directly from the bank, and the sample will be imported specifically for your treatment.
Choosing the Right Donor for You
Patients often ask how we match them with the right donor. At British Cyprus IVF, we have a dedicated team specializing in donor coordination.
We consider:
- Blood group compatibility
- Physical traits (height, body type, facial structure)
- Educational background (university/postgraduate)
- Psychological profile (outgoing, curious, positive, etc.)
Donor profiles are shared through certified documents, and personalized requests are welcomed. Our large inventory allows for fast and accurate matches based on your criteria.
