What Is Embryo Donation?
Embryo donation involves the fertilization of a donor egg and donor sperm in a laboratory setting. The resulting embryo is then donated for use in assisted reproductive treatments such as IVF.
Embryo donation is an ideal solution for individuals or couples struggling with infertility and looking for an alternative way to build their families.
Who Needs Embryo Donation?
Thanks to advances in reproductive medicine, there are now several effective treatment options available for infertility. However, in some cases, both partners have severely compromised or non-functioning reproductive systems. For these couples, embryo donation can offer a viable path to parenthood.
Embryo donation is generally recommended in the following cases:
- One or both partners are carriers of inherited genetic diseases
- History of a hysterectomy, tubal ligation, or vasectomy
- Recurrent miscarriage due to poor embryo development
- Multiple failed IVF cycles using own eggs or sperm
- Untreatable infertility in either partner
Embryo Donation Success Rates
Embryo donation can significantly enhance IVF success rates. At the British Cyprus IVF Hospital, the success rate of pregnancy through embryo donation is approximately:
- 74% on the first attempt
- 88% on the second cycle
- Up to 98.6% on successive attempts
Our success rates are among the highest in Europe, thanks to our expert team, cutting-edge lab technology, and personalized treatment approach.
Embryo Donation Cost
The cost of embryo donation may vary depending on the underlying cause of infertility, any associated medical conditions, and the type of treatments required. At the British Cyprus IVF Hospital, we believe in transparency—all treatment-related costs are shared with our patients in advance to avoid surprises and build trust.
Who Can Receive Embryo Donation?
Embryo donation is suitable for individuals or couples with:
- Low or no ovarian/sperm reserves
- Recurrent IVF failure
- Genetic conditions preventing the use of their own gametes
- Medical history preventing natural conception
Our treatment is inclusive and designed to support all intended parents on their fertility journey.
How Is Embryo Donation Performed?
The embryo donation process includes the following steps:
- Initial consultation (online, over the phone, or in person in Cyprus)
- Medical evaluation – Includes physical exams, lab tests, and imaging
- Hormonal treatment for the recipient
- Fertilization using donor egg, donor sperm, or frozen embryo
- Embryo transfer (usually on day 5 of development)

Embryo Donation Treatment at Our Clinic
Patients applying to our hospital for embryo donation can undergo most of the treatment remotely from their home country under our direct medical guidance. They only need to travel to Cyprus for one day for the embryo transfer procedure.
Before starting the treatment, you may have a free preliminary consultation with our doctor via phone to receive detailed information about the process. During this consultation, you will be informed about the necessary examinations and tests. If you prefer, you can also travel to Cyprus for a same-day consultation.
Patients who begin their treatment in their home country are required to undergo a gynecological examination and send all test results to our hospital. Once your test results are received, our doctors will review them and create a personalized treatment plan.
If you are menstruating, the medication to prepare your uterus will begin on day 2 or 3 of your cycle, once all tests are completed. If you are in menopause, treatment can begin at any time. Egg and sperm donors are selected based on the recipient’s preferences—such as blood type, physical traits, ethnic background, and any photos provided—and the treatment plan is tailored accordingly.
The embryo transfer can be planned as a one-day round trip. Embryos are created using donor eggs and sperm that match the couple’s physical characteristics and are cultured until day 5 before being transferred to the uterus. Any remaining embryos can be frozen upon request.
Embryos created through embryo donation are uniquely designated for the intended patient and, due to genetic siblinghood, are not used for other patients.
Your appointment for the transfer will be scheduled at our clinic. No anesthesia is required for the procedure. After the transfer, you will be given detailed instructions on the medications you’ll need to use. A blood pregnancy test (BHCG) can be performed 10–12 days after the transfer to determine the result.
